Good home NAS

Very good home NAS, not the fastest but easy to setup and good price. No issues with my MAC based household.
Great little item
by .. M. Lee (IA)
I love this item. Use it as my main storage for all of my Documents, Music and what have you. Using Multiple PC's in the household, I just direct the Search lists to the device and everyone sees the same stuff, uploads to the linkstation for everyone to play.
When I first got it, I did have to update the firmware on it. For some reason, I wasn't getting acceptible network response. Once that was taken care of, the device has been good to me.
I haven't tried the Internet access portion for the device as don't really need it or have use for it, but it does have support for it if you build an acct on their website and configure your router to forward the packets to the device.
Doesn't use as much power as a full fledged PC or Server and meets my needs well.
Cheap...and for a good reason.

Well, the truth of the matter is you do get what you pay for. I saw this as a cheap way to get a NAS configured for my home music streaming. Not too difficult....right? WRONG ! The network card internally locked up repeatedly when trying to copy my files onto it. So, I would have to reset it almost every hour. Then, the card died completely and wouldn't get an IP address from my router. This after spending hours copying my music collection and itunes to it. So, I called customer support..interesting experience. I have been in the IT field for about 10 years or so, just for some background, and to prove i do know what i am doing. But when i talked to customer support the guy on the other end had "0" customer support skills and tried to get me off the phone as soon as possible, my issue still at large. Now comes the kicker of the whole experience. I arranged to send back my unit to get repaired (at my expense mind you). And after speak with the tech guy again, found out that upon returning my drive, it would be formatted as soon as it was received (wiping out all my data). I found this quite disheartening and asked if there was a way i could move my files to another driver temporarily. Party because after my files were copied, i removed the source files to make room. So, this drive would contain all my originals. Now, to gain access to the drive is another story. It cannot be simply browsed to, as one would think. It's built on a Linux type of file structure. So you would need a driver or app to mount the Linux drive. Then, after 3 more phone calls to support (all which were quite painful) I discovered you need a special software to browse the files. Oh, and this software UFS explorer isn't free. Luckily i know someone in the industry and was able to get a copy to use temporarily.
So, my final conclusion: Buffalo makes some great storage and backup devices. I have used them professionally as well as at home. However, I would steer clear of this particular device and spend the extra dollars on a more high end unit. Take this review for what it's worth. hopefully it will help you in your decision making process.
